Hello Opponauts. I hope everyone is having the Monday they deserve a great Monday!

I have recently acquired a new vehicular unit, and while others may laugh, I have already come to love it. Some back story first though. My first car was an ‘89 Oldsmobile Cutlass. I bought it from my grandmother for a cool grande, and treated it well. It ran fine enough, and the red leather interior was a real panty-dropper in high school. Transmission went to crap after about a year, and would’ve cost more than I had to fix it up. With some savings, I bought a 2002 Dodge Stratus which has served me well since 2007. I’ve put something like 65K miles into it, and have acquired some interesting issues along the way. Fast forward to last week, and out of the kindness of his heart, my old man bought me an ‘04 Prius. He knew my Stratus was having issues, and decided to help me out. I’m eternally grateful, and while it’s not my dream, it’s better than what I had. I mean, it has A/C, and in Florida that’s pretty important.

But, it needs work. A lot of work. It’s only aesthetic, but I’m interested in doing what I can. The big issue is this:

Kinja'd!!!

There used to be a decal here for the company that owned the car. Someone appears to have tried surgery to remove the sticker/decal/whatever with a shotgun, and I’m interested in figuring out how to...... touch up the area for lack of a better phrase. I’ve got a touch up paint pen from Toyota for some of the smaller dings/scratches. But beyond that, I’ve not much experience. Any advice for moving forward? I’d really appreciate the help!

First off i’d get some clay to try to get some of the sticker residue off. I bought a car that had stickers from the dealer on the windshield (price) and had to clay to finally get all the residue off.

I’ve not used clay before, but that sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll try some clay and elbow grease.

First I’d check junkyards and craigslist for part outs to see if there’s a matching color Prius you could steal a door off of. If you can’t find one, I’d probably just bondo it and paint it.

Hello Opponauts. I hope everyone is having the Monday they deserve a great Monday!

Interesting choice of words. I don’t know that I want to help you :)

Body filler for the holes, colour match paint

That square area is (I believe) the result of that area of the paint not being exposed to the sun the same as the rest. I have no idea what to do, short of stripping and repainting.

Are you worried about the dents or just the marks? You should be able to get all of the residue off with a buffer and touch up the scratches with some paint. Otherwise you’re sanding and bondoing.

Good call. I’ll try a junkyard near me and see what’s available. I’ve not replaced a door before, so I’m unsure how simple/difficult that would be. Thanks for the suggestion.

No problem, I've only clayed my cars a couple times. It's actually really easy, just be generous with the lubricant and be patient. Doesn't require much elbow grease, just make a lot of passes. Here's a great tutorial: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PRwgnh…

Doing a door is really simple. Just unhinge the old one, disconnect the electronics and swap, even if you need to swap the panel it’s not that hard at all. Also if there’s any more stickers on it use goo gone, it’s a miracle.

Use lots of lube and less elbow grease. If you get a clay kit it will come with some spray detailer to use. The clay should slide easily across the surface except when it hits something like a bug, sap spot or other junk. If detailer isn’t available clay when the car is still wet with soapy water.

I was mostly concerned with the residue. Washing and scrubbing hasn’t done much, but I might not be using the right products/tools. What would you recommend buffing with?

Thanks for the help!

If you can get the door card off try and push the edges of the holes flat a little then maybe fibreglass> filler and spray paint it. Wont be perfect but itll be cheap and a big improvement.

Secondary to because racecars suggestion of a new door it isnt always quite as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting. If theres a lock on the door youll either need the seperate key for it or swap the barrels.

Twas meant in jest! I only wish for everyone to have what they are destined for: the inevitable entropic destruction of the universe.

Less existentially though, I appreciate your advise.
The square area is darker than the surrounding paint though, and I thought the paint that was exposed would get darker, not lighter.

Any advice for moving forward?

Be careful with the floor mats.

Just trying to get that off you might be able to do it by hand with a thicker cut polish and some microfiber rags, but I’m kind of guessing on that. Someone else probably has an easier solution.

Basically, the paint underneath is protected, and the rest fades normally. Paint always gets lighter with age.

Unless it’s a Ferrari, in which case it will eventually darken to Charcoal Grey.

That’s exactly what I thought, but after about 15-20 minutes of work, I didn’t notice a difference. I appreciate the help though.

Someone else recommended this as well. I might have to give that a shot, but it depends on how hard it’ll be to get in that area. Definitely worth a shot though. Thanks!

But if I don’t do shit, how will everyone know I’m the enthusiastest? I’ve already washed and waxed in 4 times since Saturday, it feels like a waste if I don’t sink all my life’s savings into it.

It’s a prius, so priority #1 is making sure people know you're better than them. It's only logical.

Is there some way he could mask off that rectangle and age it some how? Some kW UV lamps or something?

But how do I do this in the best way possible? Can I get a bunch of stickers to adhere to the back so people know all my political/ideological leanings? Do I replace the pedals with cheap metal bits I find at autozone and get some ironic truck nuts? Or, do I take out the transmission, and replace it with a manual? If I do that, how is the best way to let everyone know I drive a manual?

I honestly don’t know. would probably take a long time, and in the end you might end up overdoing it.
